Valerie Stevens is a native of Albany, New York. She has worked in the Albany City School District as an English Language Arts teacher for the past twenty-one years. Prior to teaching she was the Student Service Coordinator for the Liberty Partnership Program housed at Albany High School. She worked with at-risk youth providing them with counseling services and programs which encouraged them to pursue higher education or trade school. She has dedicated her life to working with at-risk youth in the community while also being a wife and mother of twin daughters.
Her continued connections with the many students she’s taught goes beyond the classroom. Allowing herself to be accessible to her former students gives her the opportunity to continue counseling, motivating and inspiring them on their life’s journey. Although some of her students’ paths caused them to end up in the judicial system she responds to every letter from them. Her belief is that no matter where they are in life -support is and always will be needed. Valerie has worked closely with Lamont Carey as one of the editors of his book Reach Into My Darkness and secured funding to bring Mr. Carey to William S. Hackett Middle School.
Valerie received her Associates Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York, a Bachelors of Arts in Secondary Education English and a Masters of Science Degree in Education from The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York.
